Unfortunately, I didn't place. In all honesty, I walked away not understanding what the winners had that I didn't. Yesterday I went to Game Kastle, a hobby store minutes away from the con to pick up some paint. The manager was trying to help me when he noticed that I had my convention badge on. He then asked if I entered any of the tournaments. I replied that I entered the painting competition with a chaplain, but I didn't place, likely because I didn't have a big enough model to leave an impact. He responded that that's not the reason I didn't place, but it instead was mostly that my black armor lacked depth. I think the look of "how do you know this?" was written on my face, because he then let me know that he was in fact one of the judges and a serious competition painter. I ended up spending over an hour talking to him about how to improve and he offered to give me some lessons when I'm down in the bay area. It was a crazy coincidence, but I think he might be able to help me take my painting to the next level. Hopefully I can try some of his tips out in the September challenge this month. |
