They changed their mind about the weapon options at the last minut so I had to bust the arms of and re-do it... Personally if it had been me choosing the weapons I would have gone with the power fist/shield kit out anyway simply because it marks out the commander and gives interest to what otherwise might look like a bit of a dull unit. Just finished the icons, the blue armour and the red helmet of the champion, all airbrush work! The vinyl cutter is invaluable in making the nice stencils for the SM icons... So much better than decals!!! Member Since: May 13, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Friday August 9, 2013 5:35 AM I have received a ridicules amount of questions about the vinyl cutter through email and the several forums I post on so here is a brief and generic bit of info on the subject that will hopefully address the basics, I will do an extensive video and article on the subject asap given there is so much interest! Essentially a vinyl cutter is an electric cutting tool similar to a printer (but that cuts things...) Thus you can cut your own mini stencils out of a masking material. For the ultramarines I painted them grey with the airbrush before highlighting up to white. I then applied my stencils (basically identical to decals but pieces of masking tape) and then airbrushed them black, highlighted up to light blue. After removing the masking and doing a couple of minor touch ups with my brush (as well as painting in everything else) this was the end result: Pro’s: The advantage is it is essentially a painted on design, no issues with decals, poor adhesion/conformation to surfaces etc (I've never managed to get a decal look the same as a freehand design...) It also enables you to shade/highlight the symbol colour + the colour going over the top very easily so it gives a more realistic finish with next to no effort. Also you can print any design you want, decals are restrictive... Particularly when you client asks for it to "look like the box" and like in the case of the assault marines GW had freehanded all the icons (so the decals are all the wrong size...) Depending on the brand you get they can be very versatile too... Mine cuts thin plastic (and like millions of other things) so I can make my own durable airbrush stencils, flat model components (thin pre cut armour plates etc) or really pretty much anything! Con’s The main downside is the cost... For your average guy a vinyl cutter is way too expensive... As a commission painter though I can justify the expense. The model I have cost around $400 au... I have a Silhouette Cameo... I would recommend the Silhouette Portrait to anyone in the market for one (same thing just smaller and thus cheaper) Other than the cost a disadvantage is that you sometimes need to do a bit of touch up work (paint can get under the mask sometimes) and ripping paint can be an issue (I recommend varnishing between layers). Also you can’t cut things that are too fine, the detail that these things can do is limited (this depends widely on the brand and the masking medium etc). Basically it's a great tool but not necessarily something that's practical for the average hobbyist... If you can find one cheap over eBay though go for it! You can always try out the techniques just using a craft knife + masking tape... I used that method to get the design on this SW's shoulder pads and also on pants of Yarri (the diamond pattern): This was shown in the video Tutorial I made a while back: This same method of using a knife to cut out airbrush stencils is used in this article to stunning effect: ARTICLE Enjoy guys! any questions feel free to ask though I will do a proper tutorial as soon as possible!
