Finally a coat of watered down PVA glue was applied to seal it all on (fingers crossed it doesn't mess with the paint). Terminators aren't attached yet, they'll be going on a wine bottle cork for painting. But the next stage is primer. Now, if you'll excuse me...I've got a lot of wine to get through. I got a lot of learning from painting these guys. They've been sitting on my shelf for many years, so my thanks to the community here for inspiring me to dust them down and get painting! Up next will be the Leman Russ - still half a month left but it's a big model...could be tough so wish me luck! =) RD...out. I was happy with the way they turned out in the end, but I nearly stripped them back to the plastic right near the start. For the blues, I followed the tutorial on how to paint Ultramarines on BuyPainted's YouTube channel I made a decent attempt for a first go at reproducing the strongly contrasting dark-to-light blue zenithal lighting, but my effort seemed to transition from too dark to too light in the poor desk lamp light I was working under. As a result I panicked and nearly destroyed the effect by dusting on a coat of the base french blue...first time I nearly stripped it back. Next time, I'll stick with the original result until I can see it under daylight and after a good nights sleep. I hung on until after the black oil wash deepened the shading and after clean up, the lighter areas seemed to come back a little. I masked the bodies and sprayed the helmets white then once dry applied a very thinned blue oil wash. The detailing then followed fairly quickly with a mixture of dry brushing and regular brush painting. The bases are the standard bases that shipped with the minis. I used some wall filler to texture them and pressed in some small stones and a few left over bits from my Imperial Guard. I painted black, dry brushed two layers of grey and added some green flock using PVA glue. To finish, I had a pop at some OSL on the over head lamps using a mix of yellow and light green to contrast the blue and then applied a matt varnish. Job done. Next up is the Russ but I've been scratching my head for the past hour... Is the Cadian cammo scheme green with tan stripes OR tan with green stripes? 0_o RD...out [[Edited by RustyDice on Wednesday October 16, 2013 4:43 PM]] [[Edited by RustyDice on Wednesday October 16, 2013 4:45 PM]] Scientists study the world as it is; Engineers create the world that has never been. ~Theodore von Karman |

Nice work on the termies; glad you didn't strip them down in the early going - things often come together as you're going. Such is the case here! Looking forward to the Leman Russ (sorry, I have no idea on the camo scheme). |

I made some progress on the Russ yesterday after taking the tail end of last week to catch up on the Formula 1. But the job was a poor effort and this time it really was the best thing to strip it back to the plastic. If tomorrow goes to plan, I think I can make up most of the lost time. Basically, the weathering effect on the base green was just rubbish, looking totally over cooked. But I took some good notes and I think I should be able to avoid the same mistake. I also really learned a lot from painting the terminators and I'm already looking forward to expanding my UM army in the near future which so far stands at...*leans back to look over at the shelf*...five terminators. Soooooooo. Yup. Gonna be busy. RD...out Scientists study the world as it is; Engineers create the world that has never been. ~Theodore von Karman |

![]() Member Since: August 28, 2013 ![]() RK: 1 MP: 0 ![]() ![]() | Monday October 28, 2013 5:26 PM Quick update! After a really rubbish week with no time for anything fun, I spend a little of this weekend working on the Russ - On top of the primer I put down a base of VMA Hull Red around the tracks and in the recesses. The panels and tops got a coat of VMA Cammo Black Green. I added THREE layers of AK Interactive Heavy Chipping (first time using it, my local hobby shop got it in and I got a good price one it, so I thought I'd have a go) Next up was VMA Russian Green. Then I masked up the tank with some Plasticine, and sprayed with VMC Stone Grey. ![]() Then came the chipping - ![]() (A reminder that I'm not attaching the weapons to allow for all options if I ever start back at gaming) As per flickr T&C here's the link to the page - http://www.flickr.com/photos/92359999@N06/with/9679952431/ Which I think I kinda over did. I really just wanted the top layers of paint 'rubbed' off rather than lifted back to the base coat. Next time I would only use one coat of the Heavy Chipping and be much more patient with it. I'm happy enough with the result, it just means that I've kinda committed to some heavy weathering to match the scale of the chipping which I'm gonna be really pushed to deliver on time wise. But tonight (Monday) I managed to do most of the detailing and apply the first wash. Tomorrow I'll clean up the wash and add some oil streaks and rust. Wednesday I'll touch up the detailing and add some powders then seal with a few layers of matt varnish. Thursday evening (31st!!!) I'll snap a few shots and call this one done... Wish...me...luck...
