September 28, 2013 by DreamKnight

This member highlight was brought to you by WGC Producer James from the
Gift of Chaos Studios!
He sits down with a WGC member John and asks him some questions so we can know what the man thinks and what's behind all the wonderful talent! What does he do for a living? Do does he enjoy outside the hobby? All those questions that makes us who we are!
Where does the name Moggy come from?
The name Moggy comes from my last name McGee which turned in Mogee. I had a few accidents when I was a kid and people said I had nine lives like a cat so it changed to Moggy for the cat. My real name in Andrew John McGee. I stole my dad's Facebook page so people know me on there as John Moggy's Miniature's McGee.
How long have you been into hobby?
Well, it all began when I was 9 when I got Hero Quest for Christmas but it was mostly scale modelling until about 12 or 13. You know, planes and tanks covered in glue and very badly painted.
At 13 I walked into games workshop but It was when they sold all sorts of miniature's like Dungeons and Dragons. I got Dragon's and Judge Dread stuff and it was fun. Then I grew up and life got in the way. I forgot about how much I loved it and then 3 years ago I was walking around a craft store and I saw some GW mini's again. I bought the 40k starter set which has the paints and space marines. I was hooked and never looked back.
Do you do commissions and if so explain your business?
I do paint a lot of Forge World stuff because I am known for it but I paint anything. I love all miniature's however most of my work is 40k as most of my clients are 40k players.
Is there a trick to your trade?
No there is no tricks. I work by myself but I put in a 9 hour work a day into my work. The best advise I could give is practice. We all start at the same point but you will get it. I use my airbrush a lot as well so that will help the quality of your work. It's a really great tool. Don't be afraid of messing up as you can easily strip the model and try again as many times as it takes. Experiment a little.
Do you have a blog, YouTube channel, twitter or any other kind of social networking?
Yes, I have a YouTube channel its
mcgeemoggy5115 and my Facebook is
John Moggy's Miniature's McGee. I am a commission painter so if you like my work and you need something, contact me using any of the sites.
Anything else you'd want to say? Any advice and other comments?
Well I'm 37,but I started modelling about 12 and been doing it on and off since then.but I started back doing miniatures about 3 years ago , and havnt looked back since.
I'm just a hobbyist and I love all the fluff but I don't know how to play but would consider playing one day. I don't have time for other hobbies or interests and I'm to busy at the moment but love watching movies and listening to all kinds of music. I also listening to 40k audio books.

I love painting and my inspiration is watching other painters work. There's all sorts of great work out there. I watch as many Youtubers and WGC Facebookers work. If you don't get inspired that way then there's something wrong!
If you need to fight burn out just take a break every hour or two, watch a film or listen to music or a book. You can talk to fellow modellers on facebook for a while as well.
My advice for commission painting is use all the social media to get your name out there, such as facebook youtube google and ebay. These all helped me at the start. Always remember to do your best even if your not liking what your painting at the moment. Remember, the people you paint for have different tastes to yourself.
