The Saturday’s tournament was a great example of how a 5th ed codex can still hold its own and dominate in the 7th ed tournament scene. Out of the top 4 lists, 3 were pure necron forces, with an eldar army placing a solid 3rd. This was the first event using the new WGC format, which I’ve outlined below for anyone who’s missed it so far!
Overview Of The WGC Tournament Format
- 1 Detachment/500 points of tournament
- 1 Rules source/500 points of tournament
- 1 Lord of War/Fortification max
- Forge World allowed only if FW units to be used are submitted to tournament organizers by 2 week deadline. A list of all units that will be in play will be sent to all registered attendees to give them time to familiarize themselves with those rules
- There will be a checklist of all tactical objectives with alternates for impossibilities
- Warlord, chapter tactics must be marked on army list
- Players may always agree to default to dawn of war deployment if table placement makes hammer and anvil overly difficult
- All models must have unit upgrades/options modelled WYSIWYG
- Conversions and/or proxies must have approx. correct wargear and be easily identifiable to opponents
- Sportsmanship and paint scores are used only for additional awards beyond best general. Best general is gameplay only.
3-color Minimum Painting
- Terrain will be player placed
- Summoning-You may never have more than half your starting army in summoned units at one time. EX-1500 point tournament, no more than 750 pts of summoned units at a time
So, for this event, this format required no more than 3 detachments utilizing no more than 3 rules sources. The painting requirement was lifted for this event only, but was still highly encouraged. The best appearance prize was almost the same value as best general, with $25 in store credit and a Citadel paint rack. Speaking of which, best appearance went to Tom R., for his amazing free hand and weathering work on his CSM army. The overall standings and prizes can be found right…about…here:
- Bob S. - Necrons - Best General - $100
- David R . -Necrons - $55

I’ve attached the
mission packet and
tactical objective checklists we used, and as you can likely see, we used tactical objectives as a primary, with an eternal war mission as a secondary, then normal slay/linebreaker/first blood as tertiaries. We had several games end up at each point breakdown at the end, which was great!
Nobody won 21-0 all three rounds, the max points were shared by the top two places, 51, with tiebreakers being total tactical objective points of the day. I’ll only be sharing the top 3 lists with you today, but there were some very interesting combinations throughout the standings. There were some great moments throughout all 3 rounds, but I really enjoyed seeing the combination of wave serpent spam with an ork boy mob.
There were several superheavies in play, including the normal imperial knights, along with a transcendant c’tan and hellhammer. Round two saw an epic battle between the latter two, with the c’tan taking out the fierce baneblade variant and taking a win on secondaries. Lastly, our best appearance winner had a great moment of apotheosis, getting a daemon prince on to the table in his final game.

Our venue was a great help! They had plenty of terrain ready to go, I had to cherry-pick 2 hills, 2 forests, 2 ruins, and 2 LOS blockers for each table, but as you can see there were racks and racks beyond that. They also have several full battle boards, like the jungle one below. I was extremely grateful for their help in getting tables ready and making sure we had plenty of room and prize support, along with the WGC support. Jon R. of the Portal was also a great help in judging the best appearance award.
Our next event is November 29th, a Toys for Tots charity tournament that should be very laid back and fun! So now that you’ve seen the format and the lists that took the day by storm, what would you have brought to this event? What are your thoughts on the WGC tournament format?
I’d love to hear any and all feedback!
