So I found one of those Captain models from the old Assault on Black Reach starter set in a Space Marine lot that I bought on eBay. I've always liked the bolter and the power sword on that model, and thought I could maybe do some conversion to him (I don't like the head) and use him as my Chapter Master.

At this point, you can see I've removed his head (I'd rather he was helmeted) with a good deal of clipping and Dremel usage. I've added a little fancy basing and tried to strip as much of that nasty yellow paint as possible. I used a bit of poster putty in the neck area to protect it from the paint, so when it finally becomes time to glue head to neck, it'll be a plastic-on-plastic connection.

I hope to prime and basecoat with my airbrush tomorrow or so.

So, I've been able to prime, basecoat, and highlight this model today with my airbrush. As per usual, I seem to have forgotten to shoot any photos after priming the model black. I assume you've seen a primed model before.

I basecoated the front of the model with Vallejo Blue Angel Blue, and hit it from around a 45 degree angle, as I usually do.

I mainly just focused on putting the blue on the backpack and the back of the banner.

Here, I highlighted with a special mixture of the same Blue Angel Blue with a specific amount of white added. Again, this was from a higher angle (around 30 degrees or so). You can see I'm staying away from the shoulder pads and the bolter, as they'll not be blue.

Again, mainly just working on highlighting the backpack.

From this point forward, I'll mainly be focusing on brushwork, but the airbrush really speeds up the initial process and makes it look pretty good.

If you're even partially serious about miniature painting, you should really get an airbrush. My airbrush was under $180, and the compressor was a regular air compressor from a hardware store and cost about $60. It's much louder than a standard airbrush compressor, but otherwise it works fine.

Reasons why I think airbrushes are great:

I live in Wisconsin. Right now - and I shit you not - it is -19F outside, and the Wind Chill Factor is -44F. I would not be able to prime models with a rattlecan today. Or actually for about five months out of the year. Therefore, airbrushes are great for priming models and I never get that weird "dusting" effect that I get with rattlecans some days outside.

They make shading/basecoating/highlighting really easy. Using the technique I showed above so far, you can make the model look properly shaded and highlighted quite simply, giving your models more depth.

It's just as easy to do ten models at once as it is to one. If I was getting ready to go outside and do some priming or basecoating with a rattlecan, I always felt I should do a bunch at once, so as to not waste paint. With an airbrush, you can put a few drops of paint into the gravity cup and quickly prime, then basecoat, and then highlight one model. Or a bunch.

There are a bunch of other reasons, too, but these are the big ones for me that I can currently think of off the top of my head.
