Member Since: August 28, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Monday September 2, 2013 5:09 PM Hi, all! This month is my first Painting Threat! I’m always pushed for time owing to work/life and everything else, but then who isn't? So I’m maybe not pushing the boat out with a single model. The model is the LEMAN RUSS DEMOLISHER – but with the main turret weapon combinations painted and magnetised I’m intending to paint it using a mixture of airbrushing and regular brushing and mostly with Vallejo paints. But mainly, I’m planning on borrowing some of the techniques from WGC tutorials to document how well I can learn from watching them personally speaking. I’m quite new to airbrushing, with still very few hours of brush time. So I've still to find my own way. The mini is boxed and on my shelf. So no pics just yet. I’ll upload soon as I have something interesting, and flag any of the YouTube content that I draw inspiration from to give credit where it’s due. I'll also try and list some info on the steps I've taken between each pic if it's not obvious just from looking. Phew...feels like a tall order. So wish me luck! Thanks! The box has been lifted off the shelf and the dust blown off. No word yet on a place being cleared at the modelling table, but observers have noted a sudden increase in instances of fussing, muttering and rearranging of paints. More on these fast changing developments as they happen. RustyDice....out Scientists study the world as it is; Engineers create the world that has never been. ~Theodore von Karman |

Member Since: August 28, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Thursday September 5, 2013 5:35 PM I must not model past my bed time I must not model past my bed time I must not model past my bed time If I do, I usually make a mess of things... The front cannon housing needed a lot of press fitting to properly shape and locate it for the cap to sit properly on top. This meant glue smudged more than I was expecting it to. I made a bit of a mess of it...total rookie mistake, but it can be saved. It'll just take a bit of time and patience. Should have assembled the housing, then fitted it whole to the front of the hull. Lesson learned for the sponsons. I was using solvent based glue so it kind of ate away at a little of the plastic in a way I'm sure we're all familiar with. Some of the detail of this is shown below. I'll probably switch to CA from here on...I'll probably end up gluing my face to it. To cure the surface damage problem, I've some very fine grit sand paper and I'll prep the surface until I'm confident it'll not show through the paint job. That said, in the past I've used solvent based glues to texture the surfaces of armor on tank models to provide relief to some of the larger featureless panels you sometimes get. So a few marks might be allowed to remain if they add to the overall effect. Along with this effect, for the join lines, I'm going to work in some modelling putty. It has a 24 hour cure time so I might as well get stuck in with it and do as much as I can on one day. If I've time to do more than a tidy up, I'll aim to do 'weld' lines (like you see in some WW2 Russian tank turrets) focusing on where the front cannon housing meets the front of the hull and the bond line between the upper and lower hull. With no more 'fit' problems on the turret, hopefully I'll have the thing ready for primer before the end of the weekend. Member Since: August 28, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Friday September 6, 2013 7:38 PM Thanks! =)I'm hoping to push the techniques I used a little further with the Leman Russ - I kept a note book during the T-55 build and after it was complete I wen't over them and suggested improvements to myself. I find that the best way to improve because I normally go months between projects and forget a lot. The guy who runs my local model shop asked me how I was getting on with the airbrush he'd sold me and I promised him a few pictures. Some quick shots on my mobile phone of the T-55 and he offers me an invite to the local modelers meet up he runs ever few months. Really looking forward to getting some good advice and it gave me the confidence to upload the images the flickr. Something I wasn't expecting since the T-55 went together so well was the fit issues on the GW kit. They're roughly the same price but the difference...oh man...I really need to up my attention level. Hopefully, I can rework and recover. Again, thanks for the nice words and good luck with your threat this month! RD Scientists study the world as it is; Engineers create the world that has never been. ~Theodore von Karman |

Member Since: August 28, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Wednesday October 2, 2013 1:45 PM So I blew it…It was like this, right? First threat, brand new model, brand new airbrush and a whole four weeks to deliver. Sure, I had a weeks vacation booked for week three, but all my work deadlines weren’t suddenly going to get moved a month forward, were they? Yes they were. To be fair, I met all my work deadlines and since that funds the hobby, vacations and life generally I guess that’s the most important thing. So this month (October) I’m gonna complete that Leman Russ plus the 5 terminators from the black reach box set…right after I decide what scheme to paint the terminators…and the Leman Russ. I saw on the GW flickr pool someone totally nailed the LR paint scheme I was planning. Epic job. So I think I’ll have to come up with a variation on my ‘Russian WW2’ theme to stay a bit innovative (not that it was all that innovative to begin with). Here's the image from my Flickr page - And as per the Flickr T&C here's the link to the page http://www.flickr.com/photos/92359999@N06/ RD...out [[Edited by RustyDice on Wednesday October 2, 2013 3:03 PM]] Scientists study the world as it is; Engineers create the world that has never been. ~Theodore von Karman |

Member Since: August 28, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Thursday October 3, 2013 3:24 PM Hi and thanks for the comment =)Originally I was going to magnetize all the weapon combinations, but I've found after undercoating that the sponsons, and forward gun will press fit tight enough to keep them in place for a battle. The turret weapon isn't quite a press fit, but I think I'll get away with it. I can pick it up and handle it without anything dropping off, well, so long as I don't turn it upside down, which I'll only do if someone rolls a '6' which means it's destroyed which means the weapons should fall off...I'm calling that a win-win. I'll use the magnets for something else some time. RD - Scientists study the world as it is; Engineers create the world that has never been. ~Theodore von Karman |
