Member Since: May 10, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Wednesday January 15, 2014 9:50 AM Thanks everyone for the kind words. On this figure I used the following method: 1) under coated the area with Vallejo Model Color (VMC) Tan Yellow 2) painted the area wth VMC Brass. I have been using Liquitex Glazing Medium with my metalics, thins it down without losing the coverage. I ususally do a 1:4 ratio of paint to medium. It took 3-4 coats to get to where I liked it. 3) then I washed the area with Vallejo Sepia Shade Wash 4) and dry brushed with the VMC Brass to finish. Note: The Liquitex Glazing Medium imparts a gloss finish to what ever color you use it with, just a heads up if you try it with a non-matalic. Sarge "If you ain't CAV, you ain't!!" |

I will have to pick up those colours and Liquitex Glazing Medium and give it a shot for myself. The medium and the ratio may be all I need, as I find GW's metallics tend to be quite thick. |

Member Since: May 10, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Thursday January 16, 2014 12:00 AM I would suggest that you experiment with your ratio, the one I gave is just for that figure, I adjust it all the time. One thing I noticed when I use the Liquitex, is it doesn't thin it like a GW glaze, the paint will seem a little thick, but when you apply to the figure it flows very nicely. It will be a little transparent too, so just add coats till you get the effect you want. Vallejo dropper metalics are on the thick side too, I have use the medium with both GW and Vallejo with good results from both. I also use the medium for all my metalics now, and I am trying different undercoats, tired of black all the time. I hope this helps, any questions contact me and I will help. I just had a look at eBay to see if I could source some, they also in the related products had Liquitex Matte Medium. Do you think this would be better suited based upon it's Matte finish? Either way I think I will have to pick up a bottle of each next week and give it a try. |

Member Since: August 3, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Thursday January 16, 2014 8:31 AM Matte medium/varnish kills metallics. It cancels out the metal flecks, dulls them down. Just be mindful of that. That being said, try it anyway, see if you like the effect ! You can use the matte medium before the last touch ups with the metallic paint. Or you can paint a very light coat of gloss medium over the dull metallics afterward. Lots of stuff you can try for different finish |

Member Since: May 10, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Thursday January 16, 2014 11:06 AM As Yaumasta has stated, Matte/Gloss mediums are set up up as finishes, so you lose the metalic flecks, and the pigment density will be less. The Glaze mediumis an additive and will not effect the sheen of the metal flecks. I mentioned the gloss effect, in case you want to try it with other non-metalics. Member Since: December 9, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Friday January 17, 2014 3:51 AM Thanks both Yaumasta and Sarge, I can see how that could be a problem, on the other hand Im guessing the glossiness of the gloss medium should strengthen the shine of the metallics. It will just come down to trying it for my self and then I'm sure I will begin to see what your both saying in regards to these mediums |
