Would love a link to some of the models you have used the new technical paints on. Glad to hear my little trick was helpful, I hope you enjoy the technical paints as much as me. Its been one busy week, but I have made quite a bit of painting progress...I will hopefully get a chance to post a better update tonight with pictures. |

Member Since: December 9, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Friday December 20, 2013 7:25 AM Cheers neojarlaxe! Yeah the appearance I was going for was a heavily battle worn Battlesuit. A lot of the overall basing and paint style is derived from the fluff found in the Farsight Enclaves Supplement. In the Tau's Third Sphere Expansion led by Commander Farsight, the Tau attempted to colonise numerous Imperial worlds, What they failed to see was the repercussions of such actions. The Imperial Man with there space marines, Titans and crude war machines (when compared with Tau technology) inflicted a crushing blow upon the tau, a fierce unrelenting foe. In this model I believe I have captured The leading Broadside Ob'lotai 9-0 From the Farsight Enclaves, led by Commander Farsight and his other retinue of battlesuits Striding fourth, unleashing their destruction upon those that appose them on this Imperial world. Whilst of course there would be moments of rest, I presumed only necessary repairs would be performed not necessarily cosmetic fixes, especially when facing such a fierce and destructive foe. |

Member Since: December 9, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Friday December 20, 2013 8:22 AM Thanks a heap dhstarwars! Yes they are definitely worth the investment, I didn't realise how much I really needed them until I bought them. They have drastically improved upon my painting ability, very noticeable improvements. Yeah I had typed a couple of paragraphs on the numerous Processes/techniques I had used, but accidentally closed this tab when retrieving the image links for my earlier post. I will try and do my best to re-write what I had. Weathering: Process 1: - Squig Orange & Celestra Grey: Squig Orange was use for all the red panels and Celestra Grey for all the grey panels. Here I roughly highlighted the numerous areas, edges and panels that would suffer from wear and tear during the wars they currently fought in. The front features far more damage compared to the back, this is because realistically Ob'otai 9-0 would be attacked head on. - Necron Compound: Necron Compound was used to fill the inside of the shapes I had created all over the armour panels. - Typhus Corrosion: now here is where my newly created weathering technique diversifies from other weathering techniques out there. Usually a rust like brown is used and fills in these shapes, whilst I have used similar techniques before I had found its lack of texture and depth to be its only detracting factor. Here in its place I used Typhus Corrosion, this created texture through its fine grit and through doing so added to the depth of this battle damage. - Typhus Corrossion, Ryza Rust and Necron Compound: The last step I did was subtly stipple, and in some places dry brushe Typhus Corrosion followed by Ryza Rust and Necron Compound onto these textured areas. What i found this did was add a little more colour to these worn areas. Process 2: - Agrellan Earth: This weathering technique is one I devised, here I tried to create the impression of dried mud clinging and cracking as it seeps up from the feet and legs. Like the previous technique it builds upon the narrative of the piece, here I have attempted to create the Impression that Ob'lotai 9-0 has been in the field, helping to deter the forces of the Imperium for a long period of time. whilst yes these battle suits would go in for repairs, it would not be the cosmetic side of things being repaired, it would be the necessary things like the repairing of sensors, we open systems etc (especially when they are involved in ongoing conflicts with the imperium). Aggrellan Earth was initially dry brushed on, applied heaver lower down on Ob'lotai 9-0, softening the higher up the leg. - Agrax Earthshade: Agrax Earthshade was then applied to numerous panels on the feet to deepen the colour, this alluded to some mud just being collected and still in the process of drying. - Agrellan Earth: Aggrellan Earth was then used thickly in select crevices/ flat surfaces, mainly around the feet. This was left to dry and produce a cracking effect. - Zandri Dust: Zandry dust was then dry brushed over the leg and feet areas previously weathered, this blended the colours together seamlessly. - Agrellan Earth & Praxeti White: Agrellan Earth and Praxeti white were used in a way to create the impression of directional light filtering over these areas (keeping the direction of the light consistent). These were the two processes that utilised the Technical paints to great effect when weathering the armour. Other new techniques were used in mapping the directional lighting over the armour panels and better Lense effects. I found the techniques used for directional lighting shaded and highlighted the model far better than my original edge highlighting techniques. Lense wise originally each shade of blue was not seamless, the transition between each shade visible. Here my new lens techniques feature a seamless transition through each of the shades. The secret I have found is a 50:50 ratio of your desired colour ad Lahmian Medium. Overall Im very satisfied with how this model has turned out, I have seen a massive improvement in my painting ability. I am considering trying to paint two shielded missile drones to go with Ob'lotai 9-0 now for my bonus challenge. I have kept the bonus relatively small since i know the next few days will be pretty busy. I hope some of these techniques help and thanks for your ongoing interest in my submission to this months paint threat. |

Member Since: December 9, 2013 Initative RK: 1 MP: 0 | Saturday December 21, 2013 4:26 AM Cheers Chris 56Ryan, I'm glad that came across in the overall model. Whilst most broadsides are located in the back of the Tau lines, I can see Ob'lotai 9-0 deep striking with Commander Farsight and the remainder of Enclave retinue right into the heart of the enemy lines and releasing there destructive potential. I've again tried to give these models an interesting, city fight base. On one of then I have even attached a spare rat from the Vampire Counts Corpse Cart I used to have, whilst the city may lay in waste it always seems to be the vermin that rise up and flourish amongst all this destruction. |
